How Many Days Do You Need in Zanzibar?

Nungwi Village Tour

The honest answer is that a week is the minimum for a proper Zanzibar holiday, and ten days is better. Here is what each length actually gets you, so you can decide before you book flights.

Three or four days

Enough for a short break, and only if you are disciplined. Realistically that means one night in Stone Town, two or three nights on one beach, and two excursions. Pick the north coast so you can swim at any tide, and choose combination tours so you are not repeating the same drive.

A workable three-day plan: arrive and transfer to Stone Town, spend the afternoon walking the old town and the evening at Forodhani. Next morning take Prison Island and the Nakupenda sandbank, then transfer to Nungwi or Kendwa. Spend the last full day on the beach with a sunset dhow, then fly out.

Five to seven days

The most common length, and it works well. One or two nights in Stone Town, four or five on the beach, three excursions with rest days between them.

Suggested shape: Stone Town first, because arriving there is easy and the excursions run from that side. Do the spice farm and Jozani Forest as a combination. Move to the beach. Take one boat day, either Safari Blue or Mnemba, and one lighter day, a village tour or a cooking class. Leave at least two days with nothing planned.

Eight to twelve days

This is where Zanzibar opens up. You can split between two coasts, which is the single best upgrade to a Zanzibar itinerary. A few nights on the east coast at Paje or Jambiani for the lagoon and the kite scene, then a few nights north at Kendwa or Nungwi for the swimming, with Stone Town at one end.

With this much time you also stop rushing. You can take a day off between excursions, go back to Stone Town for a second look, and eat at The Rock without building the whole day around it.

Two weeks or more

Add a safari. Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania combine well, and flights between the island and the northern or southern circuits are short. A common shape is four to six days on safari followed by a week on the beach, in that order, so you finish the trip rested rather than driving between parks on your last day. See safari and Zanzibar.

You could also add Pemba, which is quieter, greener and far less visited than Zanzibar, for divers and people who want somewhere genuinely off the main route.

Things that eat your days

Two practical warnings.

Transfer time. The island is not large, but the roads are slow. Moving between the north and the south-east takes a real chunk of a day. Plan a maximum of one hotel change per week if you can. See transfers.

Arrival and departure days. These are rarely full days. An afternoon arrival and a morning departure means a seven-night booking gives you five and a half usable days.
