Pwani Mchangani
The quiet middle of the east coast
- Location East coast of Unguja, between Kiwengwa and Matemwe
- From the airport About 1 hour from the airport
Overview
Pwani Mchangani sits on the east coast between Kiwengwa and Matemwe, and it has the qualities of both without the resort density of one or the boutique pricing of the other. The name means Sandy Beach, and the description holds: a long, white, largely undeveloped shore backed by fishing villages and casuarina.
The tide dominates the day here as it does along the whole east coast. At high water the lagoon is calm and swimmable. At low water it retreats to expose a wide flat where the seaweed farmers work and the beach stretches out for kilometres of firm walking.
There are a handful of hotels along this stretch, mostly mid-range, with the Mnemba atoll snorkelling grounds a short boat ride away and Kiwengwa’s facilities ten minutes down the coast.
Pwani Mchangani suits travellers who want the east coast beach and the reef access without the crowds, at a lower price than the boutique properties further north.
What makes it special
Pwani Mchangani offers the same east coast beach and reef access as its better-known neighbours, with far fewer people and a wider range of mid-range accommodation.
Best time to visit
June to October is dry and breezy.
December to February is hot and bright.
March to May brings the long rains and the quietest beaches.
Check a tide table. The beach transforms between high and low water.
Where to stay
Mostly mid-range beachfront hotels and a few smaller properties. Better value than Matemwe for a similar stretch of coast. We book across every category and will match the property to your budget.

Frequently asked questions
How does it compare to Kiwengwa?
Quieter and less developed, with fewer large resorts. Kiwengwa is ten minutes away if you want its facilities.
Is Mnemba easy to reach?
Yes. Morning snorkelling boats leave from this stretch of coast.
Does the tide affect swimming?
Yes, significantly. At low water the sea retreats a long way. Most hotels have pools.
Is it good value?
Generally better than Matemwe for a comparable beach, with more mid-range choice.
